During the war, U.S. soldiers were issued low-ankle leather service shoes designed for durability and mass production. These shoes were intended to be worn with canvas leggings (M1938 or later M1943), a system that provided ankle support and protection while remaining lighter and more flexible than traditional high boots. This combination became one of the most recognizable elements of the American soldier’s silhouette in North Africa, Italy, Northwest Europe, and the Pacific.
