WWII German Hand-Cranked Dynamo Flashlight
Wehrmacht Taschenlampe – Type 224Imported from Germany | Original Wartime Example
This is an original Second World War German hand-cranked dynamo flashlight, commonly issued to Wehrmacht personnel for field and civil-defense use. Designed to operate without batteries, these lamps were essential in an era of material shortages and were relied upon by soldiers, air-raid wardens, and support crews throughout the war.
Unlike later civilian copies, this example retains its heavy steel body, wartime ribbed top plate, and original fold-out crank handle used to generate power mechanically. The clear glass bulb lens remains intact, housed in its correct recessed bezel.
The side of the casing bears period markings including “IMPORTÉ D’ALLEMAGNE” and “TYPE 224”, along with voltage and current specifications—details consistent with authentic wartime and immediate post-war German production intended for military and government use.

Historical Context
Hand-cranked flashlights like this were issued because they eliminated reliance on batteries, which were scarce during wartime Germany. Their rugged construction made them suitable for trenches, blackout conditions, bunkers, and emergency civil defense use.
Today, original examples are increasingly difficult to find in complete condition, particularly with legible markings and intact components.
Collector Notes
Authentic WWII-era German field equipment
Excellent display piece for a militaria collection, study room, or museum setting
